Nicole R. Fleetwood, writer of the award-winning Marking Time: Artwork in the Age of Mass Incarceration, will be part of New York University’s Steinhardt School of Tradition, Education and learning, and Human Enhancement as the inaugural James Weldon Johnson Professor.
Marking Time (Harvard College Push, 2020), which received a 2021 Countrywide Guide Critics Circle Award this spring, explores the function art plays in surviving incarceration by interviews with incarcerated folks and their family members, prison staff, activists, and others.
Fleetwood, a curator and most recently a professor at Rutgers College, New Brunswick, will be element of the college as a tenured professor in NYU Steinhardt’s Section of Media, Lifestyle, and Communication (MCC) as nicely as the James Weldon Johnson Professor of Media, Tradition, and Interaction.

Fleetwood has curated or co-curated exhibitions and courses on artwork and mass incarceration at the Andrew Freedman Residence, the Aperture Foundation, the Cleveland Community Library, Japanese Point out Penitentiary, MoMA PS1, Mural Arts Philadelphia, the Zimmerli Art Museum, and Worthy of Rises.
